The Australian trade union movement, including the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU), has long upheld the principle of advocating for the rights of marginalised groups and individuals, including the LGBTQIA+, or queer, community.

Unions strongly believe there is strength in diversity.

Historically Australian unions were instrumental in advancing LGBTQIA+ rights, with early activism in the 1960s and 1970s when gay liberation groups were forming across Australia. Many of those involved were active in their unions, seeing a common cause between their own struggles and those of women’s equality, Aboriginal rights and the struggles of working people.

Unions like the Builders and Laborers Federation (BLF) supported queer student activists and teachers, and opposed workplace discrimination. The 1973 “Pink Bans” were the first recorded instance in the world of union members striking for LGBTQIA+ rights at Sydney’s Macquarie University. Such actions illustrate the trade union movement’s staunch belief in people’s right to be free to be who they are and to leave no one behind.

The efforts of CPSU union members continue to be crucial in shaping progressive workplace laws and protections, as well as broader social reforms - including marriage equality in more recent times. Australian trade unions remain steadfast allies, promoting the rights of queer and gender diverse communities through inclusive workplace policies and collective bargaining, working towards advancing causes such as gender affirmation leave and stronger discrimination provisions
