CSL - How important is work / life balance to you?

9 June 2009, 1:44pm

Negotiations continue for your new workplace agreement and your union (CPSU) has outlined its claims for better work / life balance and family-friendly conditions for all CSL staff.

  • Do you want the flexibility to work for a day off each fortnight or month?

  • Should parental leave and part-time work arrangements be improved?

If you answered YES, now’s the time to let CPSU know you support these improvements – attend a meeting (details below) or email your comments to hayden.jones@cpsu.org.au

At this week’s bargaining meeting CSL outlined its business case for wiping out an important flexibility that CSL staff won many years ago – the 9 day fortnight. CSL’s insistence on 10 day fortnights means less and less staff are able to work slightly longer days to accrue a day off per fortnight.

Many staff have told CPSU they want to access this flexibility of working hard to gain a regular day off, an important day to invest in yourself and/or your family – but have you / your group talked to a union representative or attended a meeting to support this claim? We will only secure this flexibility if staff speak up.

Can CSL lead the way on family-friendly conditions?

Another successful global Australian company recently granted 18 weeks of paid maternity leave to its staff (BHP Billiton). Your union wants CSL to also take a lead and grant its staff:

  • 16 weeks paid maternity & adoption leave
  • 6 weeks paid supporting partner leave
  • Part-time work: better flexibility on days per week required by an employee to meet caring responsibilities, including no reduction in salary level if working P/T in a lower-level position (pay would still be pro-rata)

CPSU team needs your support to fight off CSL cuts

Current Agreement CSL’s proposal for new Agreement
4.5% pay increase p.a. for all staff 2% pay increase p.a. for all staff (CPSU claim: 6%)
Shift work penalties payable on sick / carer’s leave No penalties when sick or need to take carer’s leave
Shift work penalties payable on annual leave No penalties when on annual leave
Additional payment (Albumin/IG & Chemistry) No additional payment

Is it fair that shift workers get a pay cut if they are sick, need to care for their family or take their annual leave? Your staff reps on the union negotiating team have told CSL these cuts are totally unacceptable. We also rejected the idea of preserving the additional payment for existing staff and cutting it for new staff.
