DEEWR: Pay parity… Not yet

15 August 2008, 5:31pm

Management has announced an interim measure to address some of the discrepancies in pay across DEEWR. All DEEWR employees covered by the terms of a former collective agreement are to move onto a new pay scale that reflects the best of what exists in those CA’s.

Good

  • Many DEEWR staff will get a nominal pay rise in September
  • All CA staff will be aligned
  • No CA staff member will be disadvantaged.

Bad

The CPSU has given in principal support to the CA pay realignment because we see no disadvantage to the affected staff. However, this does not fix the pay

  • DEST CA staff would have received this pay rise anyway – and are therefore not advantaged
  • the new pay scale does not reflect the best of current salary/ bonus arrangements in the agency – AWA staff are unaffected
  • over 650 AWA staff will have salary that is less than the new pay scale

Clearly DEEWR needs a single pay scale. The CPSU has been advocating for pay parity without disadvantage, and this is a positive first step. But there is a long way to go. Now that we have CA staff on the same page we can hit the negotiation table for some real relief; a pay scale to reflect the best of current salary/bonus arrangements and a pay rise for everyone.

CPSU ready to negotiate

We share your frustration at delays in getting down to the nuts and bolts of negotiation. The CPSU is ready to go with;

  • A draft DEEWR staff bargaining claim
  • CA and AWA comparison breakdown
  • Statistical results from the CPSU DEEWR bargaining survey

Stay tuned for paid time meetings where the CPSU will present the draft claim for finalisation and address any concerns you may have with managements pay realignment for CA staff.
